Often following a cardiovascular event, our cardiologists may refer a patient to Scotland Memorial Hospital's Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program. This medically supervised program is designed to optimize a patient's physical, psychological, and social functioning. In addition to stabilizing, slowing, or even reversing the progression of the underlying disease process, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation can help reduce the chance of death and disability and reduce health care costs.

Cardiac Rehab
Scotland Memorial's Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Cardiologist Dr. Olujide Lawal serves as the cardiac rehab medical director.

A Three-Phase Program
Cardiac Rehab at Scotland Memorial Hospital consists of three phases:

  • Phase 2 offers a supervised exercise program along with heart monitoring and educational classes
  • Maintenance follows Phase 2 and usually lasts for approximately nine months. Heart monitoring is provided as needed.
  • Wellness is an ongoing, independent exercise program

Components of the Cardiac Rehab Program

  • Supervised exercise - an individually prescribed physical conditioning program
  • Nutritional assessment and counseling
  • Personalized diet, blood cholesterol and body composition analysis, monitoring and counseling
  • Stress management assessment
  • Screening for various emotional and personality risk factors and instruction in relaxation techniques and stress management
  • Vocational assessment
  • Assistance in return to the workplace
  • Cardiovascular education
  • Information on risk factor modification including smoking, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Patients must undergo an exercise electrocardiogram to assess physical stamina and the level of tolerance for exercise. Other tests may be administered to obtain a complete patient profile and analysis including:

  • Body composition analysis
  • Blood lipid analysis
  • Diet history
  • Smoking habits
  • Evaluation of daily stress and stress management skills

Program Candidates
This outpatient program is designed for men and women who have had a heart attack, heart surgery, chest pain or risk factors for heart disease. The program serves those who have one or more of the following diagnoses:

  • Angioplasty (ptca)
  • Cardiac transplantation
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Coronary artery bypass graft surgery
  • Myocardial infarction

  • Stable angina pectoris
  • Valvular Surgery

Participants enter Cardiac Rehab soon after hospital discharge by physician referral, with a range of five days post-surgery to nine months post-event. The average patient is four weeks post-event. The goal of the program is to safely and promptly transition patients from a cardiac event to the point where they can return to work or pursue their favorite activities, while providing them with support, guidance, education and improved physical condition.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Physicians refer patients to the pulmonary rehab program during stable periods of the disease process. This may include recent hospital discharges or after an acute incidence of disease symptoms. The goal is to educate patients on the disease process and the appropriate use of medications and equipment and they work to improve physical conditioning and endurance through exercise. Additionally, they help reduce feelings of shortness of breath through retraining and energy conservation resulting in enhanced quality of life.
