About Scotland Regional Hospice:

Since 1986, Scotland Regional Hospice has been committed to providing exceptional, compassionate end-of-life care to people in our community. A team of professionals and volunteers, including physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplain, and bereavement counselor, provides personalized care for each patient and family we serve.

Hospice care is for patients who are considered to be in the last 6 months of life, as certified by a physician. Our care focuses on pain control and symptom management. A team of professional staff members provides personalized care for each patient. Patients receive care in their homes, in rest homes, assisted living and long-term care facilities, as well as hospitals.

Vision:

The vision of Scotland Regional Hospice is to provide care for persons near the end of life so they may live as fully and comfortably as possible, and to offer continuing support to their families and community.

Mission:

The Mission of Scotland Health Care System is to work with our health care partners to create and operate a patient centered, integrated system to provide Safe, High Quality, Compassionate, and Sustainable health care to the people we serve.

Volunteer:

Volunteering at Scotland Regional Hospice is a great way to lend your time and talents to a worthwhile cause. Whether answering phones in our office, assisting with our annual golf tournament, or spending time with patients and their families, you can make a difference in our community.

Ways to Volunteer

With 120 volunteers donating more than 7,500 hours annually, the staff at Scotland Regional Hospice considers volunteers to be the "heart" of the organization. Volunteers are involved in every aspect of the program, graciously donating their time and talents.

  • Fund Raising - Volunteers help with two annual fund raisers: The Tree of Remembrance in December and the Annual Hospice Golf Tournament in the spring. Volunteers donate hundreds of hours to ensure the success of these events every year.
  • Marketing - Volunteers are the most effective members of our marketing team.  Just through simple word of mouth and participation in organizational activities, hospice volunteers shine a positive light on Scotland Regional Hospice by showing their support of our mission to others in the community.  Our volunteers also promote our services by sharing information at health fairs, festivals, senior centers, churches, and other community groups and events.
  • Patient Care Volunteers - Because of the sensitive nature of the work involved, our patient care volunteers must participate in our training program, but completion of the training will open the volunteer up to many meaningful service opportunities.

The training program is designed to give new volunteers a broad view of the mission of Hospice. During the 12-hour program, which is usually offered twice a year, you will learn about the Hospice philosophy of treating both the patient and family. Hospice staff and volunteers cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to Hospice
  • Bereavement and Grief
  • Physiological and Psychological Aspects of Terminal Illness
  • Spiritual Care
  • Volunteers Communication
  • Documentation
  • Confidentiality

Patient Care Volunteers can work in the following areas as members of the Interdisciplinary Team:

  • Family Support - The patient/family volunteers becomes involved with the daily lives of the family. These volunteers may provide respite, a prepare a snack, or simply "be there" for the patient or caregiver. The simple presence and caring touch of a volunteer can do more for a family than a thousand profound words. This special sharing requires active listening skills. With professional confidentiality, the patient/family volunteer provides support to the family during their loved one's end-of-life journey.
  • Bereavement Services - Bereavement volunteers work with families after the loss of their loved one for up to thirteen months. These individuals provide support to family members through telephone calls, visits, cards and the recognition of special dates. The bereavement volunteer may opt to work at special events such as the Candlelight Memorial Service and Camp Spinoza.
  • Staff Support - Volunteers can help with the daily activities of the office by working at the front desk, copying manuals and handbooks, helping with direct and bulk mailings, typing, acknowledging gifts and record-keeping.
