2026 Beckers Social

Scotland Memorial Hospital has been named to Becker’s Healthcare 2026 list of “Great Community Hospitals,” a national recognition that highlights hospitals delivering exceptional care and making a meaningful impact in the communities they serve.

Notably, Scotland Memorial Hospital is one of only three hospitals in North Carolina to receive this distinction, underscoring its leadership in advancing rural healthcare and improving patient outcomes across the region. The recognition was shared directly with Scotland Health’s leadership team in early June.

This latest honor follows another major national recognition earlier this year, when Scotland Memorial Hospital was named to the Forbes 2026 Top Hospitals list, further reinforcing the organization’s commitment to quality, safety, and patient-centered care.

Scotland Memorial Hospital, a 104-bed independent community hospital, has served residents of southeastern North Carolina for more than 80 years. As the largest employer in Scotland County, the hospital supports more than 1,500 jobs and plays a vital role in the economic and overall well-being of the communities it serves.

“This recognition reflects the dedication and compassion of our entire team,” said David Pope, Chief Executive Officer of Scotland Health. “Every day, our staff chooses to serve this community with excellence, ensuring that high-quality care is available close to home. Being recognized by Becker’s affirms the work we are doing to strengthen healthcare in rural North Carolina.”

The recognition comes during a period of significant growth and innovation for Scotland Memorial Hospital. In 2024, the hospital completed the first phase of a $65 million Surgical Services and Imaging Expansion—the largest capital investment in its history—with the addition of six new operating rooms. In 2025, the second phase was completed, adding 21 pre- and post-operative rooms, a new waiting area, and modern conference space designed to enhance both patient experience and clinical collaboration.

Scotland Memorial Hospital continues to lead in advanced surgical technology. The hospital was the first provider in North Carolina to implement the Mako 4 robotic-arm surgical system, delivering sub-millimeter precision, advanced 3D modeling, and expanded capabilities in joint replacement. The addition of the da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system has further expanded minimally invasive procedures across general surgery, OB/GYN, and urology. The healthcare system also upgraded its orthopedic robotic technology to the latest version, the Mako 4, further advancing precision and outcomes with sub-millimeter accuracy, advanced 3D modeling, and expanded joint replacement capabilities.

In addition to innovation in care delivery, the hospital has been recognized nationally for quality and safety. Scotland Memorial Hospital earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Primary Stroke Certification, marking a significant milestone for a rural hospital.

The organization remains committed not only to patients, but also to its workforce. In December 2025, Scotland Memorial implemented discounted tuition opportunities and opened an on-campus daycare center with extended hours, designed to support employees working 12-hour shifts—an initiative developed directly from staff feedback.

Further reflecting its commitment to innovation, Scotland Memorial Hospital was recently named among four finalists for the 2026 American Hospital Association’s Rural Hospital Excellence in Innovation Award.
