LAUREL HILL – Hospice of Scotland County proudly announces the successful completion of its 30th Annual Camp Spinoza, held May 31 and June 1 at the Monroe Camp and Retreat Center. This cherished event, which takes place during the first weekend of June, offers a supportive and nurturing environment for children aged 5 to 12 who have recently experienced the loss of a loved one. With the generous support of the Scotland Memorial Foundation and the dedication of numerous volunteers, Camp Spinoza remains a free resource for families in need.
The weekend kicked off on Saturday morning with registration and introductions to the camp staff, primarily composed of volunteers. Campers were welcomed to their cabins before diving into a full day of activities designed to foster connection and healing. This year’s participants enjoyed a variety of engaging experiences, including a nature walk, healing circle, disc golf, labyrinth, arts and crafts, campfire songs, S’mores, swimming, and other traditional summer camp activities aimed at building bonds among the children.
Understanding the profound impact of grief on children, Camp Spinoza incorporates guided meditation and communication exercises to help participants navigate their emotional and psychological pain.
“These activities are essential, as children often face unique challenges when coping with loss,” explained Tanya William, Hospice of Scotland County bereavement coordinator. “They may struggle to express their feelings, feel isolated in their grief, or experience anxiety about the future. By participating in group activities, bereaved children can share their experiences, learn from one another, and develop healthy coping strategies in a safe and supportive environment.”
On Sunday morning, campers enjoyed breakfast and fellowship time, followed by a morning worship service with family. The camp concluded with its annual butterfly release, symbolizing hope and new beginnings. Each child left Camp Spinoza with new friends, valuable coping strategies, and cherished memories.
"Bereavement care for children is essential in helping them navigate the complex emotions that arise from loss,” Williams said. “Camp Spinoza provides a safe space for them to express their feelings, connect with peers who share similar experiences, and develop healthy coping strategies. By addressing their grief early on, we empower children to heal and grow, ensuring they do not carry the weight of their loss alone."
