Scotland Cancer Treatment Center hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

The Scotland Cancer Treatment Center hosted its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk last week to kickoff a month of activities geared towards raising awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.  The one-mile walk around the Scotland Memorial Hospital campus is a staple of Scotland Health’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities each year.  Participants included Scotland Health staff, cancer survivors, caregivers, and community supporters.

“The Breast Cancer Awareness Walk went well, especially since we have not had one in 2 years due to COVID-19,” shared Jennifer Wilkes, Director of Scotland Cancer Treatment Center and Outpatient Infusion.  “We had 90 walkers in attendance.”

Guests of the event were donned with pink apparel and accessories.  Event decorations were pink including a flower and butterfly clad golf cart which led the way.  Pink sashes were provided to the participating survivors and some of the refreshments on hand were even pink.

Donated giveaway items were also provided to the guests.  Laurinburg Cinema provided popcorn, Railroad Bar and Grill donated coupons and merchandise, Valinda Ganous contributed a one-hour massage, and cookies were given by Teresa Vick.

According to the Susan G. Komen organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States.  1-in-8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.  Scotland Health encourages all women to get their routine screenings. Early detection and treatment greatly improve the chances of survival.
