Greg Wood NCHA Award

Greg C. Wood, CEO of Scotland Health, has received the 2022 Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina Healthcare Association (NCHA).

The Distinguished Service Award is presented to the chief executive officer of an NCHA member institution and recognizes a health care leader who has made valuable contributions to his/her institution, the health care field and to NCHA. Wood received the award at the NCHA's annual meeting, where more than 100 hospitals were represented across the state.

Greg joined the staff of Scotland Memorial Hospital in 1990, in what was then a seven-year-old facility that had opened at a new location. Only a few short months into his tenure, Greg was promoted to President and CEO. Scotland County is one of the most resource-challenged counties in all of North Carolina, and the hospital is the largest private employer in the area. Greg’s commitment to and leadership in his community is centered around a belief in serving and providing care for all.

Greg’s leadership of Scotland and as a leader in the community is unparalleled.

His work responding to the needs of the community over the past 10 years– two 100-year floods in the aftermath of hurricanes Matthew and Florence and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic put his foundation building to the test. Greg’s leadership and community engagement helped protect and support Scotland County residents.

From helping the under- resourced County Health Department by providing drive through testing and vaccination clinics, to community outreach in underserved communities, Greg implemented needed interventions to serve the community. Scotland Health became the primary distributor of vaccines in the community, distributing 20,00 vaccines in a county of only 34,000 residents. He and the Chief Medical Officer were the face and voice of virus protection, becoming regulars on the local radio station, on social media and in the local newspaper.

Recognizing that the team at Scotland Health are their greatest asset, Greg ensured that staff were supported by ensuring his presence on hospital floors and implementing a compensation package to reward service, dedication and their sacrifices as they battled the virus.

In addition to his 32 years as president and CEO, Greg has twice served on the NCHA Board of Trustees, is a current Mentor in the NCHA Diverse Leaders Mentorship Program serves as an NCHA Regional Policy Council member, is the Chair of the NCHE Workers Compensation Fund.

In addition to his service to NCHA, Greg serves as Chair of the Board at Costal Carolinas Health Alliance and the Chair of the Southern Regional AHEC, amongst many other volunteer and philanthropic endeavors.

Greg’s service and dedication exemplify his belief that Scotland Health is “Closer Care, Better by Far.”
