Scotland Health Care System is committed to the fight against breast cancer, that's why we are pleased to offer 3D mammography. Breast tomosynthesis produces a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue that helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue.

First in the Region
This new state of the art equipment is the latest step that Scotland Health Care System has taken to ensure that women in our region have access to a more accurate tool for breast cancer screening. This technology is the first and only available in our region and is an important resource for women in our communities and surrounding communities that we serve.

Why choose a 3D screening mammogram during your next breast cancer screening exam?

  • A 41% increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers
  • A 29% increase in the detection of all breast cancers
  • A 15% decrease in women recalled for additional imaging

Any woman who needs breast screening should consider 3-D mammography. Women with dense breast tissue or risk factors, like a family history of breast cancer in particular, may benefit because it provides a clearer picture. A 3D Mammography exam is now the only mammogram that is FDA-approved as superior to standard 2D mammography for routine breast cancer screening of women with dense breasts.

Comfortable Breast Cushions
In addition to offering mammography technology, Scotland Health Care System offers a warmer, softer and more comfortable mammogram by using single-use breast cushion for every patient. These breast cushions are soft foam pads that can help relieve the discomfort many women feel during a mammogram. The cushion is placed on the surface of the image detector, providing the softer, more comfortable mammogram.

These pads have been clinically demonstrated to reduce discomfort associated with mammograms for most women. While the breast cushion provides comfort, it does not compromise the image quality needed for a routine mammogram.

Accreditation
Scotland Memorial Hospital's mammography service has been accredited by the American College of Radiology since 1993. We proudly display the ACR gold seal of accreditation which represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety.

The gold seal is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed.

Same Experience, Better Results
The exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam. In a 3D exam, multiple, low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D reconstruction of the breast.
