Scotland Health Care System is pleased to announce Pediatrician Dr. Freda Singletary has returned home to Laurinburg to provide children’s medical care at The Purcell Clinic.

Dr. Singletary grew up in Laurinburg, where she attended middle and high school. The daughter of former Principal Rick Singletary and Valerie Singletary, Dr. Singletary was very active in the community growing up and plans to once again become part of the local community.

Upon earning an undergraduate degree from North Carolina A&T State University in Chemical Engineering Dr. Singletary worked for Intel in Arizona for two years before making her first career change, returning to Laurinburg to teach 7th grade science and social studies at Spring Hill Middle School. There she enjoyed encouraging her students to dream big and to reach for the stars.

After two years of teaching, Dr. Singletary followed her own dream, and applied to medical school at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. After earning her medical degree she completed a residency in pediatrics at Georgia Regents University - Children's Hospital of Georgia in Augusta, GA. Ready to enjoy small town living once again, Dr. Singletary says of her return. "I am very excited to be returning home to practice medicine and to expand pediatrics services in the Laurinburg area in order to create a healthier community. Working here in my home town I will be able to watch my patients grow up and to have a relationship with them like the one I had with Dr. Glenn Harris when I was growing up. Both he and Dr. Jonathan Rowson at Maxton Family Practice Center had a very positive impact on my life, providing me with excellent advice during medical school concerning my career."

Dr. Singletary originally planned to specialize in allergies. However, after only three days on a pediatrics rotation she found that pediatrics was her love and decided to make the switch to specialize in children's health. "I'm really a big kid at heart," she says. "I love children. I love pouring myself into my patients."

"We are excited that Dr. Singletary has returned home to join the staff of The Purcell Clinic," says Dr. Tharon Howard. "She is quite an asset to our medical practice. Because she is from Laurinburg she already has an understanding of the local community. Our patients will love her bubbly personality and outlook. We look forward to increasing access to pediatric care to our patients. In addition to Dr. Singletary joining the practice, we are opening an office in Rockingham in September to offer pediatric services five days a week. We'll be located at located at 125 Biltmore Drive Rockingham."

Dr. Singletary says she returned to Laurinburg in order to be closer to her family. With her father, mother, brother, sister-in-law, five nieces and nephews, and two god daughters in the area, she is very much looking forward to being able to attend graduations, family reunions, birthdays, anniversaries, and other holidays. "No more missed occasions for me by living out of state," she says. She enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time with her nieces and nephews in her free time. Dr. Singletary will see patients at The Purcell Clinic, located at 418 S King St, Laurinburg, NC. For appointments, please call 910-276-7570.
